The War of Evolution by *Laurence55:iconLaurence55:

Torcoroma Holy Sanctuary
At the core
Virgin Mary sits
in a tree root.

Her curving beak
gives the illusion
of an enigmatic smile.

So now the big question is,
"Are the dead to return"?
So many researchers
are divided over
Neanderthals and God

Were it not for hot spots
in the top layer of
the ocean's surface,
most of us
would be swimming.

This is an example of what is called a "found" poem. I put this together using sentences and fragments from three specific magazine articles. They all came from National Geographic. One was about a new bird species that was discovered, the others were about earthquakes, and the discovery of a woolly mammoth skeleton. I used the articles to build a cohesive poem. None of these are my own words :-) Just my thought process in organizing and imagination. This was written for my workshop class.

This one I am not sure what to think--that is to say, it is above me, but I did enjoy it. You say the virgin mary is there, and then suddenly she has a beak, and she is wondering about the dead in a kind of vulgar way....makes me think of Bad Man Black, an old Crow who lives behind my house. You never /see/ Black, but he owns a bunch of other crows and blackbirds and they do chores for him--a kind of bird mafia, see.

I've always believed Bad Man Black is a "skin walker"....People who pass on from their skin-bodies, and stay behind in spirit as little, mean beings...animals: totems...fish, bears, whales....As a child an Indian told me about Skin Walkers--people in skins that isn't really theirs.

It is interesting how I can connect to a poem that is really a bunch of "found" random words. The technique itself sounds like an adventure! :D

Very interesting!! Yes, I have also heard those tales (from my grandmother) Yes i love the found poem technique...building new images out of scattered documents. It allows me to reconsider the structure of language! Thank you!! :D

You're welcome, Laurence :).

If you're very interested in Skin Walkers, there's a "urban fantasy" writer who has taken a spin on them...The most he's talked about them was in his book, "Some Place to be Flying." The name's Charles de Lint; he's different, but very fresh--very unnerving, but in a good way....makes madness into a beautiful thing...mysterious alleyways filled with gremlins and mermaid's in a murky harbor, that kind of stuff. I haven't read him in ages and was suddenly remembering him.
