1.

rehashing
an old rumor...
ants
take refuge
in the sugar bag

2.

last
of the summer crickets-
chuckling
at the love names
we trade in bed

3.

leaving
my wheat crusts
for the birds-
the best I can do
till payday

4.

not black enough
to fit in...
a stray dog
barking
into midnight

5.

as if waiting
for me
to notice her-
day moon

6.

he too
must be wifeless
tonight-
old tomcat
on the front step

7.

doctor's prognosis
by phone
why now...
nodding to a song
I never liked?
This will be a seven day series of Tanka style poetry.

good stuff - soon you'll be a "learned" man (I mean that tongue'n'cheek - cause you're already a well learned man).

what are your classes this semester??

sounds cool-

I wish I had done linguistics in university.

british lit sounds full on - I find british lit quite boring most of the time. do you know who you'll be studying??

what's a senior seminar course??

Yeah, I'm not quite sure who we will be studying. I have the syllabus though. I will get the names from there.

Senior Seminar is where we put together our English portfolio (essays, writing samples, etc) for the graduate program. We also write an enormous paper at the end! The damn thing is 30 pages!!

wow - a thirty page essay - sounds intense!!

good luck with it all - though I am sure we will be talking about it as you go through it.

:D Damn, I appreciate that!!!! Since you have mentioned it though, I am working on a book. It will discuss structure as it relates to haikai (haiku, tanka, senryu, etc). I may also publish a chapbook of tanka, haiku, and senryu. That would be done much sooner

Yes, I will do it! I'm going to try having it done by summer 09. That would be the earliest. It would consist of roughly...mmmm...100 or more pieces. Not too big for the first book.
