Late summer dusk. In the quiet hours before nightfall, my family drifts, in drowsy ritual, to separate corners of the house. Dinner finished, only the kitchen appliances continue their momentum.

This is an example of the Japanese poetic style known as Haibun. Haibun is a linked form which combines haiku with narrative prose. There is also a similar form known as tanka prose, which operates in the same manner as haibun. I recently concluded a journal series on the art of haibun. It can be seen in my previous journals.
